Lord of the Dance In Kingston This January

Coming to the K-Rock Centre January 29, 2013

Be dazzled, once more, by the Irish dance spectacle Lord of the Dance, returning to the in Kingston for one performance only.

Sixteen years ago, Michael Flatley created and launched Lord of the Dance; today, it is selling out arenas and theatres as the world’s highest grossing Irish dance show. Generations of audiences - more than 60 million people from 68 countries - have seen Lord of the Dance.

Speaking about the show’s updates, Flatley says, “We have fresh wardrobes and an exciting new set featuring elements from the successful international tour I performed in last year – we sold out more than 20 dates in the UK. Fans will see technological highlights like video incorporated into an LED wall, as well as a number of changes to the overall lighting and set designs.”

Flatley, who retired from dancing in 2011, is Artistic Director of Lord of the Dance and oversees all aspects of the production. “We are really excited to introduce our fans to the new visual experience that compliments our show.” Flatley added that new interest in dancing sparked by primetime shows like “Dancing with the Stars” has fans anxious to see more Lord of the Dance style shows. '

Flatley was a special guest on “Dancing with the Stars” in the seventh season and performed on the show in 2007 and 2008. A 2012 Valentine’s Day tour launch is merely coincidence, but is fitting since an integral part of the show is a love story between the two main characters. “Lord of the Dance is a classic tale of good versus evil, based on Irish folklore that brings a romantic and passionate love story to life,” says Flatley.

The story is based upon mythical Irish folklore as Don Dorcha, Lord of Darkness, challenges the ethereal lord of light, the Lord of the Dance. “Battle lines are drawn, passions ignite and a love story fueled by the dramatic leaps and turns of dancers’ bodies begins to build against a backdrop of Celtic rhythm,” says Flatley. “Fans can expect 21 scenes of precision dancing, dramatic music, new colorful wardrobes and state-of-the-art staging and lighting.”

Kingston Students Get To Attend Sir John A. Macdonald Play!

Courtesy of Former Newfoundland Premier Danny Williams

Hundreds of Kingston and area students will be receiving an entertaining and educational Christmas present thanks to a former Premier of Newfoundland Danny Williams, who led his province as Premier from 2003 until 2010, has made a substantial personal donation to SALON Theatre’s Sir John A. Macdonald Bicentennial Commission play project.

Students extend their appreciation to Danny Williams.
“He only made one condition,” said Ryan Zade, Associate Director of the Commission,” and it is one we are enthusiastically able to meet. Mr. Williams asked that his donation be used so that as many young people as possible can attend our play, Sir John, Eh? The Musical, on Saturday January 12 at the historic Grand Theatre on Princess Street. As a result, we are declaring that day “Danny Williams Day” in Kingston.”
At KCHC Pathways to Education on Weller Avenue Program Manager Wendy Vuyk, whose group was the first one contacted by the Sir John A. Macdonald Bicentennial Commission upon receipt of the good news from Newfoundland, says youth in her program were thrilled to learn that a distinguished national leader is one of their new supporters.
“Our student participants and their families are more than excited,” she said. “All of us are looking forward to attending Sir John, Eh? The Musical, on January 12, Danny Williams Day in Kingston. What a generous and moving gesture this is on the part of Mr. Williams.”
Local philanthropist James Brown has generously agreed to provide the busses to bring the Pathways to Education youth to the Grand Theatre. Area Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, participants of Immigrant Services of Kingston and Area Youth Group and members of the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston and Area will also attend this special matinee of the play, again courtesy of Danny Williams.

The Royal Drummers & Dancers of Burundi in Kingston

Live at the Grand Theatre

In Kingston October 16, 2012

One of the greatest percussion ensembles in the world, the Royal Drummers and Dancers of Burundi have performed in the same way for centuries, passing down traditions and techniques from father to son. Their performances are as much a spectacle of dance as music.

A dozen great log drums, made from hollowed-out tree trunks covered with dried animal skins, are pounded by the drummers in traditional Burundi costume.

"… a celebration of ability, the sheer pleasure of competitive creativity, and - strikingly similar to what happens in a jazz jam session - more virtuosic than sentimental." — The New York Times

Diana Krall In Kingston With The Glad Rag Doll Tour

Mark Your calendars for February 28th, 2013

After nearly a 4 year absence from Canadian concert stages, multi Grammy award winning jazz vocalist / pianist Diana Krall returns with her “Glad Rag Doll” tour, in celebration and in support of her new Verve CD “Glad Rag Doll” which is being released this week.

diana krall, kingston, ontario, concerts, krock centre

With this new recording Diana Krall continues her incredible and distinctive takes on some of the past century's most memorable songs.

This time she has borrowed from her father's old 78 RPM Records collection for inspiration and turned to renowned producer T-Bone Burnett as a collaborator to bring these great gems back to life. These songs, first penned between the two world wars, were influenced largely by the bluesy sound of the Prohibition era, and Diana's treatment here remains true to that sound.

This tour will feature many of those great jazz and vaudeville songs along with many of the great Standards that we have come to expect from this impeccable interpreter.

Visit Kingston February 28th at the OLG Casino Thousand Islands Theatre at the K-Rock Centre for what will surely be another great evening with the music of Diana Krall.
