Downtown Kingston Gets Festive

The ice rink at Springer Market Square has officially opened. The rink appears to be a great spot to spend a Saturday night with some friends. A lively mix of Christmas tunes and the top forty hits are played over speakers so that everyone can enjoy
some music while they skate.

The rink is located just behind City Hall, and outdoor lighting as been set up. Holiday cheer surrounds the rink as several of the trees have been decorated with festive lights – including a very large evergreen! Bleachers have also been placed right next to the ice for those wishing to watch the activity on the ice.

Change rooms are available for those looking to store their belongings. The city asks that people bring their own locks for the lockers that are provided. They would also recommend that large groups call ahead to, “get the maximum enjoyment from their outing."

Looking to warm up? Plenty of coffee shops, including Starbucks and Coffee & Company, are just a short walk away. Downtown Kingston also offers many restaurants, so dinner and skating is always an option.

I definitely recommend checking out Morrison’s, which is directly across the street from City Hall, if you’re looking for a quick bite to eat or are out for brunch. Ontario Street is lined with restaurants for a more formal meal.

My friends and I enjoyed the meals we had at The Raging Bull. The chicken parmesan plates were huge, and the staff were incredibly nice. Several Italian restaurants are available, such as Frankie Pestos (also on Ontario Street), Atomica and Olivea on Brock Street. Those looking for steak can hit up The Keg, located across from the ice rink, while a more casual dinner atmosphere is available at Lonestar on Ontario Street.

The rink is open from 8AM to 10PM, seven days a week. Springer Market Square is one of Kingston’s most popular outdoor ice rinks. In addition to this rink, skating is also available at Victoria Park, City Park, and Polson Park. Details can be found here.

Springer Market Square is located at Brock Street and King Street. This location is often used during the year for the Farmers Market, or the always popular Movies in the Square event.

The Panthers of Notre Dame Brings Broadway to Kingston

The holiday season in Kingston takes on a bit of a different meaning to me each year. When some people are hanging up lights and out at malls, I can only think about one thing – high school production season.

Monday, I got the chance to preview Regiopolis-Notre Dame’s production of Hairspray, and if I could borrow a line from Tracy Turnblad herself, the show is “afrotastic”!

While this is the school’s most vibrant show in a few years (Les Miserables was put on in 2009 and Fiddler on the Roof in 2008), it also takes on the role of Kingston’s first production of Hairspray.

Although I wasn’t around back then, the show is exactly what I feel like the sixties was all about: fun, vibrant, and had wicked dancing and music. It was easy to see just how much the cast loved what they were doing up there, which in my opinion, helps the show be so much better (because who really wants to see a show when the heroine isn’t enjoying herself).

Hairspray, which was both a movie (released in 1988 and 2009) and a Broadway musical, is set in 1960’s Baltimore, a time of values, and a time for change. Overnight a plus-sized girl, Tracy Turnblad, becomes a teen sensation when she appears on the local “Corny Collins Show”, but can she take out the show’s reigning princess and fight for equality while maintaining her hair?

Hairspray runs Wednesday, December 14th to Saturday, December 17th at 7:00 pm with a Saturday matinee at 2 pm at Regiopolis-Notre Dame, 130 Russell Street. You can visit http://www.reginotredame.ca/ for more information.

Where will it be? Hamilton? Guelph? London? Kingstonians want it most of all. CBC Radio’s Jian Ghomeshi has invited cities across Ontario to put together the best invitation for him to come to their city and broadcast ‘Q’ live. The winning location will be announced on ‘Q’ on Thursday, December 8 and Kingstonians are warming up the Grand Theatre in the hope of welcoming “Q to K-town.”

The contest began organically on Twitter, with friendly jabs between London and Kingston residents, arguing about who would do a better job hosting the popular show and iconic host. Upon seeing the tweets, Ghomeshi made it official, and announced he would pick a city in Ontario on December 8th, based on who made the best case for their town on social media networks like Twitter and Facebook.

The campaign has gone viral with Kingstonians posting pictures of a miniature cut-out Jian having adventures across the city, and tweets reminding Ghomeshi of all the incredible artists, writers and musicians who call Kingston home, and the incredible history of the city.

Now the City of Kingston Cultural Services department - which manages the Grand Theatre, the most likely venue for a live airing of ‘Q’ - is upping the ante, asking Kingstonians to write a short open letter to Jian explaining what he’ll love about Kingston and why he should bring his show to the Grand Theatre. Letters will be sent directly to Ghomeshi at CBC headquarters. Letters should be emailed to jfossitt@cityofkingston.ca no later than Tuesday, December 6 at 9:00 a.m. They can also be faxed to 613-542-4633.

Kingstonians are also invited to film a video appeal to Jian at 1 pm on Saturday December 3rd outside the Grand Theatre.

If the campaign is successful and ‘Q’ comes to Kingston, a winner will be randomly selected from all letters received to win two tickets to Jian’s Grand Theatre show! No matter the outcome, four lucky winners will receive two tickets to a Grand Theatre Presents show.

And Deborah Brown, who studied fibre arts at Concordia University, now paints. Some of her canvases are colourfully impressionistic; others are finely-honed geometric designs."

From a Bank to An Inn in 165 Years

KINGSTON, ON—If it hadn’t been for a snowstorm on Highway 401, the building might now be derelict or torn down.

Weatherup Beare and Susan Shaw, a husband and wife team, were driving the 401 on a stormy night back in 2001. Alarmed by drifting snow, they took refuge in Kingston. And then says Shaw, “We bought a money pit.”

The couple had never been to Kingston, Ontario, knew nobody and nothing about its history. But when a for sale sign on the lonely building beckoned, something inside them clicked.

Back in 1846, this handsome limestone building at King and William Streets housed Kingston’s branch of the Bank of Montreal. Offices, tellers cages and the bank vault were located on its main floor, the manager’s family on its second floor and tellers on the third.

Since then the building has morphed from a bank to a men’s club with its own bowling alley and billiard room, to a private home, to an apartment.

Now the prestigious Frontenac Club Inn with fourteen bedrooms, a club-like great room, meeting rooms and a breakfast area, has replaced bowling alleys, tellers’ cages, a bank vault and tired apartments.

Their building was in its worn out apartment phase when Beare, with past experience as a full time school trustee, and Shaw in communications for a health care centre, took over. Their rationale, “It was time for a change, with their house paid off and two offspring in university.”

And a change it was! Three years in renovation, with everything needing upgrading or repair except their building’s solid limestone basement. They searched and found original architectural drawings in Ottawa’s archives and the name of its original architect, George Brown, who had also designed Kingston’s magnificent city hall. They tried to keep historical features such as a handsome walnut staircase and black and white tile floors in the entrance hall, golden hardwood floors and some interior limestone walls.

Capturing the essence of a men’s club, in their main lounge area, they included comfortable leather couches and in deep-set windows, chintz window seats. A bookcase with an eclectic choice of hard cover books has replaced a teller’s cage, and a coffee bar is in a former bank vault.

Shaw, with a deft hand at decorating, combines her sense of colour with historical features, travellers’ comfort and all the myriad details of running an inn. “It can be fun but a lot of work,” she comments.

Beare, in a navy apron, serves up a gourmet breakfast seven days a week and he adds, “Late arrivals, late for breakfast, staffing 365 days a year can be a drain on energy.

“Building a reputation is one way of attracting guests,” he adds. “We are lucky in Kingston being in the historic downtown on a quiet street, near Queen’s University, Royal Military College and one block from our waterfront. We get plenty of repeat customers. Word of mouth is a good but slow way to develop our type of business. Being included in a travel guide is an asset. Small weddings and meetings are an additional source of business and add to our reputation.”

And how do most new guests discover Frontenac Club Inn? “They find us through the Internet.”

But both agree that doing something different with their lives has been a big adventure and most of the time they are grateful for that snowstorm.

Free Museum of Health Care Events

November 9th, this year’s Margaret Angus Research Fellow Jeff Sobil will explore the history of prosthetic limbs and the unique role they have played within rehabilitation medicine, national identity and discourse on economics, morality, gender, art and science. “Spare Parts: How Crippled Masculinity Got Hamstringed & Got a Leg-Up” takes place at 7pm at the Louise D. Acton Building (31 George Street), and refreshments will follow.

To help Canadians better understand the history of health and health care, the Museum preserves and promotes the rich material legacy of Canada’s medical and health care past. The Museum serves the general public, practitioners, students, and historians through exhibitions, interpretive programs, and special events throughout the year. This year the Museum of Health Care celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Imagine spending a whole night inside the walls of an ancient fort while your imagination turns every echo into the whisper of soldiers long gone. Fort Henry, the largest fortification west of Quebec City, was built in the 1830s to replace an existing fort from the War of 1812. Restored in 1936, the fort embraces 19th century military life and has become a living museum populated by schoolteachers, soldier’s wives and the Fort Henry Guard – students trained as 1867 British soldiers.
Will Baird, the Special Events, Promotions and Sponsorship Officer for the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, says, “There are not too many UNESCO World Heritage Sites where you can spend the night just like a Victorian officer on an 1860s foldout soldiers cot. Imagine waking up in a castle with a view of the water and the entire city of Kingston!” But that is only one of a myriad of special events unique to Fort Henry.
Baird says, “In our Sunset Ceremony, the Fort Henry Guard performs a mock battle, and you get a glimpse into a British soldier’s life - a complete recreation of what history would have been like in the 1800s. This Wednesday night ceremony has been one of the top 100 events in Ontario for nearly a decade.”
On July 16 the Last Night at the Prom recreates an old British tradition and features BrassWerks and a 100-person choir. Baird says, “Once a year, in the mid-1800s in the British Empire, everyone was invited to see great bands and choirs perform in various locations – especially the Promenade.” The best part of the tradition is that everyone can sing along with the performers!
Just a week later, the famous Tattoo hosts different military bands and at the end of the evening, there is a 100-person finale in the parade square. Baird explains. “Tattoo is a Dutch word meaning ‘turn off the tap.’ Years ago, the band would march through the town playing so the bar keepers would know when it was time to shut off the taps and encourage the soldiers to return to their barracks.”
In August the US Marine Corps visits Fort Henry. “This is a co-performance that has been happening since 1954, and one of the only places that the full Battle Colour Detachment of the US Marine Corps (including the Silent Drill Platoon that executes a routine with no verbal commands) performs outside of the states.” It is fitting that a fort once built during the War of 1812 to defend Canada from the States, now delights in hosting this extraordinary event with our military neighbours to the south.
The tone of this historic fort, apparently one of the most haunted places in Canada, takes a turn for the ghostly when it is transformed from Fort Henry to Fort Fright in the fall. “This massive scare attraction showcases animatronics and ‘scare’ actors who jump out of spooky corners. One of the largest special events in the province, it won Best New Special Event in Ontario a few years ago. And last year it was nominated as one of the top 100 “must-see” festivals in the province.” It is followed by the new Victorian Holiday Festival in the winter.
Paul Fortier, a trained historian and owner of Jessup Foods and Heritage, has been at Fort Henry since 1994 and loves both history and food. He says, “There is no equivalent program of heritage dining linked to a National Historic Site anywhere in Canada. We take people back in time as though they were dining in the Officer’s Mess in the middle of the 19th century. Guests are served by soldier servants in an historic setting and because guests know they are in a unique dining setting, they can really let their hair down.”
Fortier says, “We don’t even need all the ghost stories at the fort, because the real stories are hugely entertaining. Once a Scotsman in the 89th Regiment was dining in his residence during the War of 1812 when a knock came at the door. When he opened it, a Yankee was standing there. (Keep in mind this was in the middle of the war!) Turns out he had heard that the British army paid top dollar for beef so he had herded 200 head of cattle all the way from Vermont, across the St Lawrence River, to Kingston. He had heard right though, and the two sealed the deal with a glass of wine and some gold coins.”
Today the fort and food and history and music are still deliciously intertwined. Fortier says, “Groups from across Canada say their evening at Fort Henry was the most enjoyable and entertaining they have ever had, not just because of the fun, but because they learn about Canada’s past.”

And if you are wondering if it is ever too late to start writing, this year’s festival has a new event called In Praise of Older Women which discusses creativity and aging, and there is a debut memoir by a woman who is over 80. Kingston is filled with so many talented and enthusiastic citizens who follow their passion as poets and writers. Find out how you can express yourself creatively as well. No experience required! Kingston’s inaugural Poet Laureate, Eric Folsom, welcomes his friends and colleagues – David Helwig, Joanne Page, Carolyn Smart and Daniel David Moses to read selections of their works and encourage the audience to write their own poems to share.

This free event takes place at Kingston City Hall, Memorial Hall from 5 to 7:30 pm on Tuesday, September 20. Light refreshments will be served and the event is open to all ages. Immediately following this event, Folsom will attend the City Council meeting starting at 7:30 pm where he will be introduced to the community by Mayor Gerretsen and read a poem that will become part of the official minutes of the meeting.

This event kicks off the In your own words | Kingston Poetry Project that invites Kingston residents to write about their city through poetry. Join us and help make Kingston a true city of words!

Eric Folsom was selected as Kingston’s inaugural Poet Laureate by a Nominating Committee appointed by the Arts Advisory Committee and approved by Council in January 2011. This appointment was made based on the high quality of Folsom’s writing, his deep familiarity with Kingston's history, his enduring interest in new literary voices, and his demonstrated ability to showcase Kingston as a centre of writing and artistic distinction. Part of the Festival is a Language Village, there will be 8 languages offered including Urdu, Hindi, Arabic, Tagalog, Kiswahili, Portuguese and Spanish. You can learn phrases or even get your name written out.

The main event, on Saturday Sept. 17 is of course the music and dance groups featured on the two main stages set up at Confederation Park with international and local talent. Should be a great family activity!

I wanted to share a great note from a couple who decided to spend their weekend in Kingston...

"We had a wonderful weekend in Kingston- from the moment we arrived on Saturday morning till we left Monday morning. The clerk at First Canada Inns was extremely friendly and helpful. She was a please to see each morning.

We took the Trolley Ride and Boat Cruise on Saturday plus took in the 'Sir John Eh? The Musical' on Saturday evening. The cast of the musical is very talented and I hop the show is a success.

We had lunch both days at Tango and Supper at East Side Marios.

On Sunday we toured the Kingston Penitentiary Museum, Bellevue House and the Agnes Etherington Art Centre. We also shopped at the Antique Market at City Hall. In the evening we took the Haunted Walk Tour of Kingston. As we both work for New York State Dept. of Corrections the Penitentiary Museum was very interesting.

Kingston is a very Friendly and Clean City. All the people we met were helpful and informative. We had a great time.

The concert corresponded with Earth Hour and encouraged the public to turn their lights off between 8:30 p.m. And 9:30 p.m. This global event is to acknowledge the impact we as a society have on climate change. The event packed a great sized crowd with over 1000 people in attendance, making this concert the best yet. It is reported the province achieved a four per cent drop in electrical consumption over an average Saturday in March. Try this out and let us know if it's the best you've tried... if not send the recipe for your favourite.

This recipe provides a unique experience and arguably the best Egg Benedict you will ever have for breakfast. It is served with sautéed portabella mushrooms and herb-seasoned tomatoes on Rosemary focaccia bruschetta. The sauce is not the traditional hollandaise sauce but a tangy, much lighter (and better for you), home made concoction. Serves 8

Ingredients:
12 oz. Portabella Mushrooms
1 fl.oz. white wine
1 tbsp good soy sauce
8 slices focaccia (if possible Rosemary and Sea Salt)
3 med – large tomatoes
1-2 tsp fresh mixed or dry herbs (fines herbes assortment)
3 garlic cloves
Sea Salt
Black pepper
1 tbsp Balsamic vinegar
½ cup (approx.) extra virgin olive oil
8 eggs
4 English muffins
4 tbsp (heaped) mayonnaise
4 tbsp (heaped) Balkan natural yogurt
1 tsp English Mustard powder
400g shaved Black Forest Ham
3 tbsp butter
2 tbsp grated fresh Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
Paprika

Sautéed Portabella Mushrooms
Heat olive oil, butter and soy sauce in a pan and grate in one or two garlic; heat gently. Slice the mushrooms and add to the pan. Sautee until golden brown. Add the 1 fl.oz. wine and simmer for a few minutes more and the wine reduced by half.

Rosemary Focaccia Bruschetta
Slice the Focaccia about ½” thick and toast lightly
Rub the toasted bread with a fresh garlic clove
Brush the bread with extra virgin Olive oil and sprinkle lightly with course sea salt. Bake in the oven at 300 degrees for 10 minutes just before serving

Herb-seasoned Tomatoes (the herbs used can vary with the seasons)
Using the best tomatoes you can possibly find, slice or dice the tomatoes sufficient for one to two tablespoons per person. Season the tomatoes using dry and/or fresh herbs, pepper, extra virgin olive oil, and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar (only add salt just before serving)
(Tip – In mid winter when the tomatoes are not our wonderful locally grown varieties warm the tomatoes mixture in the oven just before serving) Don’t forget to add the salt!

Egg Benedict
Take half an English muffin per person; butter the cut side and place face down on a hot pan until golden brown.
Using approximately 50g /person of shaved ham, chop across the ham into fine strips. Sautee gently in butter for fifteen to twenty minutes turning to ensure all the ham is covered and the ham cooks through.
Poach one egg /person (tip – poached eggs may be left in the hot poaching water for several minutes before plating – just remove from direct heat)

Green Woods Inn sauce (simple yet amazing)
Half table spoon /person mayonnaise
Half table spoon /person natural yogurt
Mix mustard powder into a smooth paste (one teaspoon /eight people – don’t overdo this)
Mix together and place in heat proof container and place in an oven at 300 degrees for 15/20 minutes.

Plating
Pre-warm the plates to maintain temperature. Place the bruschetta and the muffin on the plate. Top the muffin with the shaved sautéed ham and then the poached egg. Top off the egg with the sauce and dust with paprika.
Place the mushrooms on one end of the bruschetta and the tomatoes on the other end.
Dust as required with grated Parmigiano-Reggiano (mostly over the egg) and serve.

As Summer approaches, and the thought of fresh strawberries comes to mind, I thought it would be a great time to remind everyone about the Local Foods Local Chefs initiative.

Kingston is a city that promotes the use of local food and lots of restaurants, hotels and other businesses have embraced this. The objectives of the initiative are as follows:

* To increase sales of local food at the Kingston Farmers Market
* To increase the number of downtown restaurants and shops featuring local food
* To build regional market opportunities for the local food industry
* To develop Kingston as an authentic culinary tourism destination
* To increase consumer awareness of local foods

Elton Fever

Kingston was hit with Elton fever last week when the Elton John concert was announced and tickets for the big show at the K-Rock Centre went on sale. The line up for tickets was around the block and they sold out in about 10 minutes!

Luckily we managed to get some tickets and will be inviting down my mother to watch the show with us. Hopefully the race to book hotel rooms isn't as crazy and she can find a spot at her usual favourite the Holiday Inn.

Kingston is turning into a hotbed of running activities; especially now that the 17th World University Cross Country Championship will be happening at Fort Henry on April 11th.
There are 25 countries confirmed to compete and the weekend includes opening ceremonies at the new Queen’s centre on April 9th, multicultural events, community races and the chance to volunteer!

Visitors to Kingston this summer should be aware, if their not already, of a great little pub that's turning into a town favourite. I've already personally escorted two visitors from Ottawa to their doors when asked about places to eat in the city. One of the great things about The Duke is that it's centrally located downtown close to hotels and shopping. They also support the local food movement and have even offered a recipe for their Cheddar and Ale Soup.

1/2 cup (125mL) Butter
1 large Onion (rough chop)
4 stalks Celery (rough chop)
1/2 cup (125mL) Leeks (diced)
1 tbsp. (15mL) Garlic (minced)
¾ cup (175mL) Flour
6 cups (1.5ltr.) Chicken stock (vegetable stock is fine if you want to keep it vegetrian)
36 oz (1ltr.) Ale of your choice (Mill St. Stock Ale or Beau's Lug Tread Lagered Ale are good local options)
2 tbsp. (30mL) Dry mustard
2 cups (500mL) 35% cream
2 lb. (900g.) Old White Cheddar, grated for melting (Empire Cheese from Campbellford makes a great 4 yr old cheddar, Wilton Cheddar is also good)
1 tsp. (5mL) Tabasco
1 tsp. (5mL) Worchestershire
Salt and Black Pepper

Heat a heavy bottom pot. Add butter and vegetables to the pot, cook vegetables off until translucent. Add flour to vegetable mixture. Cook for an additional 5 minutes (do not allow roux to brown). Slowly add chicken stock, beer and dry mustard. Simmer 45 minutes.
Add 35% cream - bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Whisk in grated cheddar and season with Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce.
Puree and return to the stove. Bring back to a boil. Taste, season with salt & black pepper.
Serves 10

Spring Foot Falls in Kingston

For many, Kingston is a destination for culture, entertainment and sailing; but a thriving athletic scene is starting to draw new types of visitors to the city, runners! During the year the Kingston Road Runners Association holds a race almost every month and for 2010 there will be two races in June and September.

The big race weekend of the year in Kingston is happening at the end of April, the 24th to 25th and includes three races. The Saturday will have the KidsFest 3K and the KGH Trauma 10K and Sunday is the Half Marathon and 5k.

Runners from outside of Kingston are always welcome for the big race weekend and discounted accommodations are available at the Four Points Sheraton

In an effort to kick start the local food movement tons of great recipes have been popping up that feature regional products. I’ve already posted one great recipe from Bistro Stefan and below is another one from Kaitlin Byrick, Local Foods Local Chefs Coordinator.

Braised Pork Belly
2 lbs boneless pork belly
4 cloves garlic
1 onion, roughly chopped
3 stalks celery, roughly chopped
1 sprig fresh thyme
1 sprig rosemary
1 dried bay leaf
4 cups chicken stock
½ cup soy sauce
½ mirin (rice wine)
1 tbsp packed brown sugar
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat oven to 225F. Place pork belly skin side up in a medium oven proof casserole dish and score skin with a sharp knife. Scatter garlic, onion and celery over and around pork belly.

Add thyme, rosemary, bay leaf, stock, soy sauce and mirin to the casserole dish. (Liquid should come halfway up pork; if it doesn't , add water). Cover tightly with foil and bake, stirring occasionally and basting pork with liquid, until very tender, about 6 hours.

Increase oven temperatures to 500F. Sprinkle top of pork with brown sugar and salt and pepper to taste; bake uncovered until top is golden and skin is crisp, about 20 minutes. Let cool, then cut into slices. Strain sauce and drizzle over meat.

Serves 4

Skiing allows you to choose your pace so the excursion can be as leisurely or as strenuous as you wish. Beggar’s Purses

After savouring the Beggar’s Purses at Bistro Stefan (located at the Best Western Fireside Inn), I simply had to have the recipe! Fortunately, they were kind enough to provide it to me…very simple and so delicious…

Ingredients:

·2 Chicken Breasts

·1 lb Cream Cheese (Room Temperature)

·3 cups Mushrooms (Assorted or choose your favorite)

·2 piece Shallots

·3 Cloves Garlic

·1/4 Bunch Fresh Tarragon

·Salt & Pepper to Taste

·3 Cups White Wine

·2 Tbsp Olive Oil

Directions:

1.Chop mushrooms, shallots and garlic all the same size

2.In a frying pan, warm some oil and sauté mushrooms, shallots and garlic

3.Once you smell the garlic, add your chicken and white wine

4.Cover and simmer until 90% of the liquid is gone

5.Remove from heat, remove chicken breast and cool

6.Once cooled, roughly chop all ingredients together

7.Add cream cheese into mix and blend

8.Season with salt & pepper and tarragon

9.You are ready to wrap mixture into your favorite crepe!

Winter Blah Remedy

Now that the holiday season is over and the snow and cold is no longer festive it can sometimes be a struggle to enjoy the remains of the winter. Luckily for those in Kingston FebFest is a welcome opportunity to embrace winter again. .

FebFest has been growing steadily in Kingston for the last few years drawing larger and larger crowds. For FebFest 2010 events will run for a week, starting Monday Feb. 1st with this finishing up on Sunday Feb 7th.

Hockey and skating are the main highlights of the Festival with the OHL all-star classic, Stanley Cup display, free skates and the ice show Imagination on Ice with Elvis Stojko.
However there are many other activities such as a snow sculpture competition and the Flying Canucks that make it a great time for even the non-hockey crowd.

As I mentioned earlier the Kingston Photo Contest has been wrapped up and the grand prize winners have been decided. Deliberation was tricky because so many entries were amazing. The winners had dynamic shots of the city from perspectives not normally seen.

The Kingston Photo Contest came to a close a few weeks ago and all the entries have been processed and reviewed. There were a lot of great entries with beautiful pictures of Kingston through all seasons, fun group shots and lots of fantastic scenery imagery as well.

For each week of the contest weekly winners were decided and the following were our winners:

There are only a few more days to submit your photo to the Kingston Photo Contest. Remember the contest is open to anyone (student, visitor, resident) who has a great shot of Kingston. For example our latest entry from Jerry Simon; about his photo Jerry says "In 2003 I was living at Harbour Place on Ontario Street and had a magnificant view of the Kingston Harbour. I took this picture from my window with a simple point-and-shoot 3 MP digital camera."

Stress Free Last Minute Shopping

Christmas looms heavy as next week approaches but hopefully only a few purchases are left on your list. If you still have a lot of shopping to do you might consider a weekend trip to Kingston. Kingston has all the standard big box stores and outlet malls but the downtown has some unique shops with great gift ideas. Many Kingston hotels have special packages available for the late shopper as well; First Canada Inns has a Christmas Shopping Packages that includes gift certificates to local restaurants and shopping centers which mean less stress for last minute shopping.

Attention Kingston Photographers!

There is a great contest that started December 1st from the Kingston Accommodation Partners. They're inviting Kingston residents, visitors, students, anyone really, to submit their great photo of Kingston to photocontest@stayinkingston.ca. All the rules and prizing information can be found here.

There are already a few entries and the "I Love Kingston" blog has agreed to post some of them. Among them are Jim Vance's "Summerhill" and Cyndy Gibson's "Little Girl with Santa".

Kingstonians truly are one of a kind!

I just got back from the One-of-a-Kind show in Toronto. I was shocked and impressed by the Kingstonians I ran into. There was atleast 6 vendors from the area and at 3 different booths we ran into other Kingston shoppers all up for the day just like us! Very cool.

This weekend, we have a one-of-a-kind type event right in our own town - so we don't have take the trip down the 401 this time. The Gift Giving Show at Fort Henry. Maybe this time it will be the Torontians that come out in force for our show! We've already got some Toronto vendors, now we just need the Toronto shoppers! The show and the Fort have secured a good hotel deal for those travellers at the Four Points Sheraton. Crossing my fingers the flipflop turns out!

Kudos for Kingston

It’s always great to hear nice things about the city you live in, especially when it comes from visitors. Below are a couple of great examples of people loving Kingston

“On behalf of my friends Julia and Aisling, I would like to sincerely thank you for the generous rate that you gave us on the weekend. The suite [at the Four Points by Sheraton] was perfect... we spent so much time in the room catching up with each other (as only girlfriends can). It was ideal having the separate living room.

Before leaving the hotel on Sunday, we decided to make this an annual event and booked our reservation for next November. Thank you for giving us a great rate on the room - I received an voice mail from Daniel today and an email from guest services as well. We can't wait to come back! We enjoyed Kingston as a city... there is so much character. We spent Saturday afternoon at the Dolce Bella spa which was lovely. We'll go back there next year again as well!

Torch

The countdown has long been underway but with only a couple of weeks to go the time left until the Olympic Torch comes to Kingston almost upon us. On December 14th the torch won’t just be passing through the city but because Kingston’s designation as a “celebration site” it will hang around for a few hours of Olympic festivities.

Just a few blocks form the Holiday Inn at Spring Market Square there will be an introduction from the Vancouver Olympic Torch Relay Committee at 6pm with live music and performances leading up to the arrival of the torch at 7pm.
