“Marilyn Monroe” in Kingston on Oscar® Night!

Join The Grand Theatre Foundation as they celebrate the 84th Annual Academy Awards® with the Annual Red Carpet Gala on at The Grand Theatre on February 26, 2012. Apparently Marilyn Monroe has made a comeback in 2012. The bombshell entertainer is finally being honoured at the Oscars® through the nomination of Michelle Williams for her spot on portrayal in My Week With Marilyn

Monroe's last banner year was in 1959 when Some Like it Hot grossed 25.1 million dollars and ranked first in 1959 as the best grossing movie of the year. Michelle Williams, recently took home the Golden Globe for her performance but will she win the gold statue come Oscar® night? Let's not forget, Meryl Streep is in the same category and hasn't won since Sophie's Choice in the early 1980s.

In celebration of Michelle Williams stunning interpretation of Marilyn Monroe, the Red Carpet Gala Committee has invited the top Marilyn Monroe impersonator in Canada to make her Kingston premiere appearance at the Third Annual Red Carpet Gala Event. She will be doing meet and greet sessions, with photo opportunities and guests attending this spectacular event will get the rare chance to see Marilyn who will vocally perform a couple of her well admired songs.

A kiss on the hand may be quite continental,
But diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
A kiss may be grand but it, Won't pay the rental on your humble flat, Or help you at the automat.”

-Marilyn Monroe singing Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend

Those are the famous lyrics from Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend, a song featured in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. This lasting, unforgettable song was sung by the beautiful, late Marilyn Monroe and is most often associated with the famous celebrity icon.

Tragically Hip Way

One of Kingston's best entertainment venues will now sit on a street named after one of Kingston's most entertaining acts; the Tragically Hip. Kingston city councilors voted 7-6 on Tuesday night to create Tragically Hip Way with the renaming of a one-block section of Barrack Street outside the downtown K-Rock Centre arena. A wonderful tribute to a band that has done so much to distinguish the Canadian music scene. Congrats to all!

Live with Sarah Slean in Kingston, Ontario

The Canadian singer/songwriter returns to Kingston to play the Octave Theatre live on Friday March 2nd, presented by Eggplant Entertainment.

Sarah’s sixth full-length album entitled Land & Sea is set for release on September 27th. At a time when recording budgets are shrinking and album sales declining even the most ambitious of artists might be tempted to dial their aspirations back a notch. Instead, with Land & Sea, Sarah embarked on the most challenging recording of her career – a double album that juxtaposes two dramatically different aesthetics, producers, writing processes, recording environments and musicians.

Land is an unabashed pop album, recorded with producer Joel Plaskett (Joel Plaskett Emergency, Two Hours Traffic) and mixed by Big Sugar/Grady front man, Gordie Johnson (Gov’t Mule, The Trews) and Vic Florencia (Nelly Furtado, Five For Fighting, Esthero). And while Land does boast the occasional instrumental flourish – a gospel choir on the uplifting “Amen” and a full horn section on “Girls Hating Girls” for example, its central pulse is provided by a traditional four-piece rock band.

Sea is an expression of love for the classical, orchestral tradition Sarah first fell in love with as a child. Recorded at Toronto’s Revolution Recording with a 21-piece string section with renowned concertmaster/violinist Marie Berard, Sea featured classical all-stars such as members of St. Lawrence String Quartet, Gryphon Trio, and Arc Ensemble, principals of major Canadian orchestras, and several celebrated soloists. Sea is at once epic and intimate, joyful and somber. In short, it’s the most ambitious musical undertaking of her career to date.

Although Sarah split the arrangement duties for Sea with producer/composer Jonathan Goldsmith (Away From Her, Casino Jack, Bruce Cockburn, Jane Siberry), it was her first time arranging for an ensemble of this size, so the challenge was equal parts daunting and thrilling. At Goldsmith’s insistence, Slean agreed to record Sea live off the floor, tracking her vocals, piano and the orchestra simultaneously, which made the process high stakes to say the least.
